PROSTHETIC/BIONIC INTERFACES

A prosthetic interface is the point in which amputee and prosthesis meet and interact.

Össur has been the world leader in prosthetic interfaces since the companies founding in 1971. I am part of a dedicated team of engineers, designers and clinicians developing new interface products

Recent years have seen significant advancement of knee and foot prosthetics, the coming years will see a similar advancement in interface technology

KAIROS-CHRONOS: A TIME-TRAVEL EXPERIMENT

Kairos-Chronos is a grand experiment in time travel. It is a project perfectly suited to our interconnected world and needs your help to achieve its aims:

OFF-THE-SHELF PROSTHETIC INTERFACE

The prosthetic interfaces is the most critical of all prosthetic components to an amputee, If the interface does not adequately perform, then the function of all other components is critically compromised. An analogy would be if the wheels of a car are not functioning then it matters little what type of engine or body construction is used.

Typical prosthetic interfaces cause pain, discomfort and tissue breakdown. There is typically a high degree of artisan labour and skill requires to create a well fitting socket (they are hand-made)

I began developing an off-the-shelf socket around 10 years ago. Over the years this developed into a full blown obsession. It is my firm belief that prosthetic sockets will advance significantly only when they are engineered products such as prosthetic feet or knees already are. For example each prosthetic knee that is developed is an improvement on the previous version;  companies compete with one another to improve function, appearances and reducing cost. Bringing sockets into the sphere of engineered products will significantly enhance the lives of amputees.

NEURAL IMPLANTS

Utilising neural implants to control commercially available prosthetic/bionic devices has been under development for decades. This project is concerned with finally achieving this dream. Specifically to provide commercially available bionic devices which utilise neural implants for advanced control. I am part of a large diverse team of engineers, scientists, doctors and biomechanicists making this long held dream a reality

PEDOLOGICAL TOY CAR

This project is the development and manufacture of a toy car specifically designed to enhance the learning, development and fun of the children that use it. The car is designed such that manufacturing is simplistic and the assembly is by the child as part of the learning, development and fun

This project developed from a desire to provide the sort of toys for our children that simply do not currently exist

EXOSKELETAL WALKING DEVICE

Man walked on the moon nearly 50 years yet there is still no good alternative to a wheel-chair. People want to walk, stand and utilise their legs, they do not want to roll about in wheel-chairs. Unfortunately neurological injuries such as partial or complete severance of the spinal cord  have very limited options other than a wheel-chair.

This project is concerned with providing that alternative
